Our History

SMALL TOWN ROOTS

Re-Stair roots can be traced back to one man with a vision. Starting from his garage, Dan Neal created the company which in time would become Re-Stair. If Dan’s name was associated with his work, then you know that you would be receiving his best effort. We take Dan’s principles to heart to this day, as we take pride in our work knowing that we’ve done all we can to enhance both our customers’ experiences and stairs. After a little over a year, Dan hired the father-son team of Ken and Steve Carter, passing on his 40 years of knowledge and experience in the home improvement industry. Re-Stair then moved into a notably dilapidated building in Oakland, TN with the space and capacity to grow into a truly tremendous company.

However, the Re-Stair family was suddenly dealt a major blow. In November of 2019, Dan was diagnosed with lung cancer, and unfortunately, lost his battle in January of 2020. Dan was a man of integrity and strong faith who genuinely cared about people and doing everything for the glory of the Lord. Dan’s strong integrity and immeasurable love for the Lord were overt throughout his life, and we at Re-Stair seek to emulate his passion and faith each and every day.

In January of 2020, Ken and Steve began managing Re-Stair’s day-to-day operations, working tirelessly to grow the company in memory of a man who was not only a boss, but an irreplaceable friend. They officially purchased the company in August of 2020, and continue to strive to live by the principles, values, work ethic, and commitment to their customers that Mr. Neal believed in and passed on to them.

Today, Re-Stair operates out of a 3,000+ square foot facility on the outskirts of Bartlett, TN. We prepare our premium hardwood and iron products ready for installation in some of the finest homes in the mid-south area. We even do on-site custom color stain matching, with our stair treads ready for foot traffic the minute we place them on a staircase. Although we have come so far from our two car garage beginnings, we still strive to our founding principles and values of honesty, integrity, and quality, keeping them at the root of our operations each and every day.

GIVE RESPECT TO WHOM IT IS DUE

Dan Neal (pictured above) founded what would become Re-Stair as a one-man show in 2016, using all his money from his first job solely to buy equipment and complete his order. Dan had a unique zest for life and was passionate regarding any work he undertook, refusing to put his name on anything that was beneath his standards. As such, his business quickly flourished, growing into a well-known and respected enterprise. Dan’s faith was also paramount to his identity, as he loved studying and discussing scripture with enthusiasm and keen attention. He was also a family man, and dearly loved his wife Tina as well as children.

Over the next few years, Dan’s reputation and popularity flourished in the community, allowing him to hire retired special educator Ken Carter in 2018 as his assistant. With each day on the job, Dan poured all his knowledge and expertise into Ken, spending the next 6 months growing the company to staggering heights. Eventually, Dan hired Ken’s son Steve as Ken’s assistant, and eventually, the three became a strong team, growing to became more than just co-workers. However, in November of 2019, Dan learned he had stage four lung cancer and began to fight his battle holding fast to the sole belief and trust in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that whether he beat the cancer or not he had seeing Jesus face to face to look forward to. Dan believed in doing everything for the glory of the Lord with both integrity and character. These values continue on in his absence not only in Re-Stair, but also in the lives of the hundreds of people that Dan had impacted throughout his life.

FAMILY COMES FIRST

During his tenure at Binswanger Glasscraft, Mr. Carter was selected to head the team that etched the names on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC. As a child, Ken even helped his dad out on the job! When the sand blaster used to etch the names was empty, Ken would refill the blaster with a shovel.

Eventually, Bryan opened his own company, Glassical Inc., and served the Memphis area for 30 years, producing high-end, custom glass furniture and decorated glass products. Ken and Steve soon joined the Glassical team, and subsequently remained at Glassical for a number of years. It was here that they both developed the skill, talent, and precision that made their switch to Re-Stair so smooth. Today, the culmination of the character, family values, and experiences of their pasts have solidified Re-Stair as the #1 stair company in the Memphis area.

The Carter family moved to Memphis from Indianapolis, IN, in 1977, where Ken’s father, Bryan Carter, began work as the manager of research and development for Binswanger Glasscraft. The Carter family have since firmly planted their roots in Memphis, as Ken is an alumnus of Germantown High School while his wife, Katie, and both of their sons are Bartlett High alumni. Furthermore, the Carter’s have all attended the University of Memphis, and to this day are regular members of Bellevue Baptist Church, where Ken and Katie in fact met in college! It is safe to say that the Memphis area has been the Carter’s home, and they are sincerely thankful and proud to have the opportunity to serve this amazing community.
