Can I Remove This Wall?
Almost any wall can be removed-it is a matter of how much you are willing to spend.
People are always asking remodeling contractors, ‘Can I remove this wall?’ And the answer is, ‘Yes, any wall can be removed. But there are a lot of factors that affect the difficulty and cost of the job.’
Re-Stair is an experienced wall removal company in Memphis, TN. We’ll assess, advise, and execute wall removal for you. However, removing a wall involves more than just demolition. There are a lot of factors that influence how easy—and how expensive—removing a wall will be. These factors include whether the wall is load bearing, what hidden costs are involved, and which professional services you need to hire to get the job done.
Is it a bearing wall? How do you know if a wall is load bearing?
Only some of your walls are needed to hold up your house. These are called bearing walls. The rest of the walls, the partition walls, exist to divide rooms. You can remove either type of wall. Wondering how to remove a partition wall? Since there are few special considerations involved with partition walls, you can usually knock them down without much trouble. Load-bearing walls, on the other hand, are more complex to demolish. You need to take special precautions to support the structure during removal and then add a beam or other form of support in its place. Luckily, our load-bearing wall removal contractors are experts at removing these tricky walls. Whether you need a partition wall or a bearing wall removed, we can help.
So how do you know whether a wall is load bearing? Some bearing walls are easy to spot and some are not, however our trained professional at Re-stair can tell you If your wall conforms to certain situation with that you can be sure it’s load bearing.
You can usually tell whether your wall is load bearing by inspecting certain elements. Check for ceiling or floor joists that are spliced over the wall or end at the wall. These mean the wall is bearing. Walls that are stacked may also be load bearing. In some cases, you may not be able to tell for sure whether a wall is bearing. If you’re uncertain, hire a contractor or structural engineer to secure a second opinion.
What else should I know before I remove a wall?
Wall removal is one of those projects that can mushroom into a lot more work than you originally expected. For example, it’s easy to overlook the fact that you will have to patch or replace the flooring. If you have hardwood floors and the boards run parallel to the wall you are removing, you can easily patch in floorboards. But you will still have to refinish the floors to blend in the patch. If the flooring boards run perpendicular to the wall, the job becomes even more difficult.
If you have carpet, tile, vinyl, or laminate flooring, you’ll either have to replace it or put up with an obvious patch. The only other option is to install a strip of wood or another threshold-like treatment to cover the gap where the wall was. And remember, you will also have to patch the walls and ceiling alongside the new beam and posts and touch up or repaint the newly joined rooms. By including these costs in your preliminary budget, you can avoid surprises later on.
